Reactive Dog Training Classes

£60.00

(This course is only available to clients who are on our behaviour programme)

  • Does your dog lunge, growl, bark, and spin around on lead when seeing other dogs?
  • Are dog walks like running the gauntlet?
  • Do you spend your time hiding in ditches and behind cars and bushes because you aren’t sure how to help your dog cope with the sight of an approaching dog?
  • Are you filled with anxiety and dread when you see a dog approaching?

Overreactive behaviour on lead is one of the most common behaviour issues people face with their pets. It can make walks stressful for both you and your dog. You might avoid walks altogether or join the “midnight dog walking club”, hoping you will not see many dogs.

When you attend our lead reactive dog class, you have the opportunity to do all of the following under the expert guidance of our trainers and clinical animal behaviourists:

  • You will build on the skills you have already implemented in your behaviour consultation.
  • This will be done through controlled and continued exposure to other dogs in our reactive dog classes.
  • There is a maximum of four places per course, with at least two trainers to help in every session.
  • The classes are delivered at our venue in a safe outdoor location – we do not usually run reactive dog classes indoors.
  • You and your dog will learn how to relax on walks, and they will learn to look to you for guidance on what they should be doing.

Description

What is included in the price?

Owner seminar – 1 hour (without dogs)

This is the first of five lessons. Our trainers will cover venue orientation, health and safety, risk assessment, vaccination records, equipment for training classes, a goody pack (including a clicker), training methods, and course resources (free e-notes).

Training lessons outside every week for four weeks for 45 minutes at the training venue (with dogs).

Each week we will provide practical demonstrations and coach you on teaching your dogs the exercises you have been practising in the at-home behaviour consultation. You will get the opportunity to practice with your own dog around other dogs with our trainers at hand to reinforce the methods shown in your home appointment and guide you through what to do when you see dogs approaching.

The start and end of each session will involve individual dogs being carefully walked to and from cars.

The exercises will be done outside, so you must wrap up warm.

Certificate

On week five and after completing the course and exercises, you will receive a certificate of attendance.

FAQ’S

Will these classes teach my dog to be sociable with other dogs?

No. Dogs who overreact to other dogs on lead cannot suddenly be sociable with other dogs. The exercises we cover in the course teach you to teach your dog not to overreact. It is about you and your dog learning new skills when passing other dogs on the lead. Over time and with consistent training, it will gradually lower your dog’s reactivity. They will feel more relaxed when out on walks.

How quickly will I see a change in my dog’s behaviour?

This will depend on several factors, such as the intensity of the reaction, how long it has been going on, and whether your dog has other dog friends and can interact well with other dogs off-lead.

I cannot make every session. Is this ok?

The reactive dog course requires your weekly attendance; to get the best out of the course, it is crucial not to miss any lessons.
